About Us


To cater the needs of oceanographers for this country, a postgraduate program in Oceanography commenced in 1965 at the erstwhile Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography under University of Kerala. Later it was attached to Physical Oceanography and Meteorology Division (POMD) of University of Cochin.

The Department of Physical Oceanography was established in 1996 as part of the restructuring programme of the University and continued to offer the prestigious master program.

In 2001, a new course in M. Tech. Ocean Technology commenced under the auspicious of this department besides the ongoing doctoral program. The department has been a forerunner in producing skilled Oceanographers for this country over four decades. We are proud of many distinguished scientists currently serving in various institutes in India and abroad who are alumina of this department.

Instrumentation Lab

The lab is equipped with sophisticated instruments such as CTD profiler, Echo sounder, Current meter, Survey equipments, wave and tide gauges etc.



Computer Lab

Exclusive Computer labs for M.Sc and M. Tech batches with internet facility and major softwares such as Matlab, SeaDas, ELWIS and ENVI for oceanographic applications. The department has Mide-21 and ROMS computer models.



Hostel

Hostel facility is availabe at University main campus at Kalamasserry and also at Lake Side campus at Ernakulam South.


Oceanography Cruise

Conducts Oceanographic cruise for students to carryout oceanic observations at sea/estuary.


Coastal Oceanography Field Trip

Conducts Coastal Oceanographic trip for students to study coastal features along the coast of Kerala


Invited Talk

Scientists and resource persons are invited for seminar/talk to the benifit of students.


Seminar/Workshop

Department conducts seminar, workshops and training programmes


Newspaper Club

Discusses newpaper reports and news of Oceanography topics.

NSS activities


EURIDITE

This is a state government program in which famous international and national scientists are invited to stay in the campus for about a week and conduct various academic activities in the department for the benifit of students, research scholars and faculties.


Cultural Activities

Various cultural activities (LEAF, Onam celebration, Campus Day etc.) are conducted in the campus in which students gets opportunities to show their talent.
