Influence of Air Sea Interaction of Tropical Indian Ocean On Monsoon Over Peninsular India.

 

In the Indian context, the South West monsoon and North East monsoon are vital. The South West monsoon is more systematic and studied whereas the North East monsoon, which affects the Indian South Eastern Peninsular, is less touched upon. Of the total rainfall, contribution of North East monsoon is about 48% for Tamil Nadu and other South Indian States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala also get a reasonable contribution. The success of North East monsoon is very critical for the agriculture and health aspects of the South Eastern Peninsular India.

Air- Sea interaction over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and equatorial Indian Ocean offer unique features over different time scales and these play a major role in regional climate variability and change in monsoon dynamics.Northeast monsoon is a life sustaining phenomenon for the southeast Indian peninsula, especially for the state of Tamilnadu where the contribution of Northeast monsoon is 432mm against the annual rainfall for 912mm with a percentage contribution of 47%.

Hence this study which may shed more light into the temporal and spacial variability of Northeast monsoon and the possible factors which influence its variability is very much useful for the society.
