To cater to oceanographers' needs in this country, a postgraduate program in Oceanography commenced in 1965 at the erstwhile Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography under the University of Kerala. Later it was attached to the Physical Oceanography and Meteorology Division (POMD) of the University of Cochin.
The Department of Physical Oceanography was established in 1996 as part of the Cochin University of Science and Technology restructuring and continued to offer the prestigious master program.
In 2001, a new course in M. Tech. Ocean Technology commenced under the auspicious of this department besides the ongoing doctoral program. The department has been a forerunner in producing skilled oceanographers for this country for over four decades. We are proud of many distinguished scientists currently serving in various institutes in India and abroad who are alumina of this department.
