The coastal engineering team at North Carolina State University is recruiting a PhD student for 2023, preferably to start in January.

The position is funded fully, mostly through a project supported by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program. The student will work with Dr. Casey Dietrich to develop models with XBeach for real-time predictions of coastal erosion during storms along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts. In the early years of this project, we have developed a semi-automated forecast system based on 1D transects, but we hope to improve the predictions by considering 2D models in known hot spots for erosion. There are questions about how uncertainties in initial conditions will affect forecast accuracy through hurricane season, and how to automate the forecasts and communicate the results.

If the student is able to join in early 2023, then there is also an opportunity to work with Dr. Beth Sciaudone developing GIS techniques to assess transportation systems vulnerability in North Carolina.

The ideal candidate will have experience in coastal models (XBeach), programming (Python, Fortran), and geospatial software (Arc, Q, GRASS).  We are looking for a student who is interested to learn and contribute to our team.

1)      Determination of the resilience of salt marshes by coupling remote sensing data (Landsat, Sentinel, ALOS) and high-resolution numerical models (Delft3D and ROMS). This project is funded by NASA and will take place along the US eastern shore, from Massachusetts to Georgia

 2)      Quantification of biogeochemical fluxes in Plum Island Sound using a numerical model and datasets collected in the field.  This project is in collaboration with the Plum Island Ecosystems Long-Term Ecological Research (PIE-LTER) https://pie-lter.ecosystems.mbl.edu/welcome-plum-island-ecosystems-lter

 3)      Characterization of the hydrology of the boundary between salt marshes and coastal forests with high resolution measurements of groundwater and soil moisture. The Climate Extremes and Modeling Group (CEMG) at Louisiana State

Australian Current eddies in ocean biogeochemistry and productivity’.

The project will involve analysis of diverse data sets from platforms
including ships (CTDs, surface underway, triaxus 2D sections),
satellites, BGC-Argo floats and model output. We seek applicants with:
1. An Hons/MSc degree in physics, mathematics, oceanography or a
related discipline (quantitative physical or biological science or
engineering)
2. Programming experience, preferably in Matlab, R or Python
3. Familiarity with ocean biogeochemistry and physical oceanography
4. Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated by
the production of a thesis or published manuscript, seminars or an
interview

The project includes participation in a month-long voyage in the EAC
off Sydney in September 2023.

The Department of Oceanography, Inha University, Korea is searching for a PhD candidate who will improve our understanding of the behavior of sandpit (generated by sand mining) and its impact on hydrodynamics and sediment transport. The project will employ both field observation and sediment transport model (ROMS/COAWST) in the macro-tidal Gyeonggi Bay of Korea.
