The coastal engineering team at North Carolina State University is recruiting a PhD student for 2023, preferably to start in January.
The position is funded fully, mostly through a project supported by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program. The student will work with Dr. Casey Dietrich to develop models with XBeach for real-time predictions of coastal erosion during storms along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts. In the early years of this project, we have developed a semi-automated forecast system based on 1D transects, but we hope to improve the predictions by considering 2D models in known hot spots for erosion. There are questions about how uncertainties in initial conditions will affect forecast accuracy through hurricane season, and how to automate the forecasts and communicate the results.
If the student is able to join in early 2023, then there is also an opportunity to work with Dr. Beth Sciaudone developing GIS techniques to assess transportation systems vulnerability in North Carolina.
The ideal candidate will have experience in coastal models (XBeach), programming (Python, Fortran), and geospatial software (Arc, Q, GRASS). We are looking for a student who is interested to learn and contribute to our team.
Please contact Casey Dietrich (jcdie...@ncsu.edu) with any questions about this PhD opportunity. To receive full consideration for graduate studies, you must apply for admission (https://www.ccee.ncsu.edu/admission/).
Dear all,
We have a new PhD-position at TU Delft: "Sediment Transport North Sea Shelf and Norwegian Trench”. The project is a melting pot of sediment transport, oceanography and biogeochemistry. You will join research cruises, run numerical models, work together in a multidisciplinary team, etc.
You can find the vacancy here.
More info about the full project (6 PhDs and 3 postdocs) is here.
Don’t hesitate to contact me about the position or about doing a PhD in Delft.
Best regards,
Bram

I am looking for PhD students for Fall 2023
I have three projects available:
1) Determination of the resilience of salt marshes by coupling remote sensing data (Landsat, Sentinel, ALOS) and high-resolution numerical models (Delft3D and ROMS). This project is funded by NASA and will take place along the US eastern shore, from Massachusetts to Georgia
2) Quantification of biogeochemical fluxes in Plum Island Sound using a numerical model and datasets collected in the field. This project is in collaboration with the Plum Island Ecosystems Long-Term Ecological Research (PIE-LTER) https://pie-lter.ecosystems.mbl.edu/welcome-plum-island-ecosystems-lter
3) Characterization of the hydrology of the boundary between salt marshes and coastal forests with high resolution measurements of groundwater and soil moisture. This project is part of the Coastal Critical Zone Network (CZN) https://czn.coastal.udel.edu/ and the Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research (VCR-LTER) https://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/home2/
The application deadline at Boston University is December 19 2022, for more information go to https://www.bu.edu/earth/admissions/apply-for-a-phd/ or send me an email

The Climate Extremes and Modeling Group (CEMG) at Louisiana State
University is recruiting 1–2 PhD students (fully funded) to explore
climate change and extreme weather events, with a target start date in
fall 2023. Focused on extreme weather events (e.g., extreme
precipitation and tropical cyclones), our lab uses weather
observations and climate models to understand the effects of climate
variability and climate change on extreme events, and the physical
processes through which they are linked. If you are interested in the
positions, please email me (hhuang@lsu.edu) your CV and proposed
research to express your interest.
Minimum qualifications:
A master or bachelor's degree in atmospheric sciences, geography,
physics, or related fields
Prior research experience in climate change and/or environment
Strong programming skills (MATLAB, Fortran, R, Python, or others)
Excellent skills in written and oral English. International applicants
will need to provide evidence of English proficiency (i.e., IELTS>=6.5
or TOEFL>=79) by the time of application
